Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5, Episode 9

At this point, not only has Battlestar Galactica "jumped the shark", it has "chased the pigeon".*

This just keeps getting worse. With only one story left, the writers inexplicably made this a "flashback" episode, showing the audience some seemingly pointless backstories of the main characters. We learn of Anders' affinity for bathtubs, and that Laura Roslin had a tough life before the attacks. We also learned that Lee Adama once drunkenly chased a pigeon out of his apartment. Seriously, WTF? None of these narratives seemed to add anything useful, and all but the one with Baltar and his father were badly-acted and boring.

The actual "story" to this episode is flimsy. Adama consults bathtub-Anders to find the location of Hera, and gathers Galactica crew to ask for volunteers of a final mission for the junked ship, likely "one way only". And that's basically it, the rest is superflous dialog and flashbacks. Chris believes the flashbacks were "padding" on a storyline running way under time, and I thought the pre-flashbacks were put in as a way to seed interest in future BSG-prequel ventures The Plan and Caprica. In truth, it sounds like it was a little of both.

Also, that scene of Hilo and Tyrol talking in the jail cell totally blew any "suprise" of Athena betraying the fleet in the finale. Way to go, I'd say most of us were lulled into at least mostly trusting Athena by this point. Even if she doesn't go bad, that scene was stupid and contrived.

I did, however, get a laugh at Skulls' cynical observation, along the lines of: "need something dangerous done, oh, they'll just send out Skulls and Racetrack!"

One more week of this train wreck. At least in the previews of the finale there were guns and explosions and stuff. Maybe it won't be as bad as the last few weeks? My expectations are so depressingly lowered by this point, but could it please not be so bad as to leave me feeling I was robbed of two hours of life?

*Credit on this joke goes mostly to Chris.
